An Excel earned value tracker for a newbuild project, set up at work-package level for project controls engineers who report schedule and cost performance each month.
What's inside: one worksheet, "EVM Tracker", with a header for vessel, yard, total contract value (BAC) and data date. The table has 13 columns: WBS, Work Package, BAC, Planned % Complete, Actual % Complete, PV, EV, AC, SV, CV, SPI, CPI and Status. Twelve sample work packages are included, from engineering and procurement through steel and hull, outfitting, testing and delivery, plus class, overheads, project management and contingency, with BACs adding up to a sample USD 18.5 million. PV and EV are calculated from BAC and the two percentages, SV, CV, SPI and CPI follow, and a total row rolls everything up. The Status column labels each row On Track, Behind Schedule, Over Budget, Behind & Over Budget or Not Started, and conditional formatting colours SPI, CPI and Status.
How to use it: set BAC per work package from your approved budget. At each data date enter the planned percentage from your baseline schedule, the physical percentage complete measured on site, and actual cost from the cost system. Investigate rows with SPI or CPI below 1.00 first.
Limits: the percentages are typed in, so the result is only as good as your progress measurement rules. There are no EAC, ETC, VAC or TCPI columns and no time-phased S-curve; add them if you forecast at completion. A row is marked Not Started whenever PV or AC is zero, so a package with spend but no planned value, like the sample contingency line, will read Not Started.
