An .mpp file is the native project file of Microsoft Project. It holds the whole schedule model, not only a list of dates: the task outline and WBS, durations, dependency links, constraints, calendars, resources and their assignments, baselines and recorded progress. The format is binary and specific to Microsoft Project, so Excel, Word or a PDF reader cannot open it. An .mpt file is the template version of the same format.
Because the file carries the logic as well as the dates, a viewer that reads it can show you why a task sits where it does, which a PDF printout of the Gantt chart cannot. For what to look for once the file is open, see the MPP File Handbook.
"MPP viewer", "MPP reader" and "MPP opener" usually mean the same thing: a way to see what is in the file without Microsoft Project. The difference that matters is whether you can change the schedule and save it back.
