About this template
A Word worksheet for building up the price of a variation order line by line, so that the figure on the VO form can be traced back to hours, rates, quotations and mark-ups. It suits yard estimators preparing a variation and owner's teams checking a price received from the yard.
What's inside: a header for VO number, vessel, preparer and date, then seven lettered sections. A, Direct Labour, lists trades (steelwork, pipework, electrical, outfitting, painting, insulation and other) with hours, hourly rate, amount and notes. B, Direct Materials and Equipment, has quantity, unit price, amount and quotation reference. C covers subcontract packages and D covers design and engineering, including internal hours, an external design office and class submission fees. E, Summary and Mark-Ups, adds the direct costs and applies yard overhead, profit and a disruption or indirect cost allowance to reach the total variation price. F records the time impact: extension in calendar days, whether the critical path is affected, and the reference to the time impact analysis. G lists assumptions and exclusions, followed by prepared-by and reviewed-by lines.
How to use it: fill one sheet per variation and use the same VO number as the form. State the source for every rate and attach quotations. Write the overhead and profit percentages that your contract or agreed rate schedule allows, and justify any disruption allowance separately. Carry the total and the delay figure onto the variation order form.
Limits: it is a Word document, so none of the subtotals or totals are calculated; do the arithmetic in a spreadsheet or check it by hand. The trade list is generic and should be matched to your yard's cost codes.
